Paul spent his professional life in Music Education before retiring in 2008. He was Director of Music at the King's School, Peterborough (the Cathedral School) Bedford High School and the Stamford Endowed Schools.

Paul served as an Officer on the Executive of the Music Education Council, examined for the Oxford University Delegacy of Local Examinations as well as being a School Inspector.

Paul studied Music at Wadham College Oxford. He also studied for a research degree in Educational Management at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he had earlier held a Fellow-Commonership.
​
Amongst his many activities Paul was Musical Director of Stamford Choral Society for 24 years.
